ASTROPHYSICS Non–linear magnetic field decay in neutron stars – Theory and observations

چکیده
There exists both theoretical and observational evidence that the magnetic field decay in neutron stars may proceed in a pronounced non–linear way during a certain episode of the neutron star's life. In the presence of a strong magnetic field the Hall–drift dominates the field evolution in the crust and/or the superfluid core of neutron stars. Analysing observations of P and ˙ P for sufficiently old isolated pulsars we gain strong hints for a significantly non–linear magnetic field decay. Under certain conditions with respect to the geometry and strength of a large–scale magnetic background field an instability is shown to occur which rapidly raises small–scale magnetic field modes. Their growth rates increase with the background field strength and may reach ∼ 10 4 times the ohmic decay rate. Consequences for the rotational and thermal evolution as well as for the cracking of the crust of neutron stars are discussed. A&A manuscript no. Non-Relativistic Limit of Neutron Beta-Decay Cross-Section in the Presence of Strong Magnetic Field
One of the most important reactions of the URCA that lead to the cooling of a neutron star, is neutron beta-decay ( ). In this research, the energy spectra and wave functions of massive fermions taking into account the Anomalous Magnetic Moment (AMM) in the presence of a strong changed magnetic field are calculated. For this purpose, the Dirac-Pauli equation for charged and neutral fermions is ...
متن کاملDifferent Magnetic Field Distributions in Deformed Neutron Stars
In this work, we review the formalism which would allow us to model magnetically deformed neutron stars. We study the effect of different magnetic field configurations on the equation of state (EoS) and the structure of such stars. For this aim, the EoS of magnetars is acquired by using the lowest order constraint variational (LOCV) method and employing the AV18 potential....
متن کاملMagnetic Fields of Isolated Neutron Stars: Evidence for Decay
We show, that different types of isolated neutron stars (INSs) show evidence in favor of magnetic field decay in these objects and discuss how observations of INSs can help to constrain models of field decay.
متن کاملConstraining parameters of magnetic field decay for accreting isolated neutron stars
The influence of exponential magnetic field decay (MFD) on the spin evolution of isolated neutron stars is studied. The ROSAT observations of several X-ray sources, which can be accreting old isolated neutron stars, are used to constrain the exponential and power-law decay parameters. We show that for the exponential decay the ranges of minimum value of magnetic moment, μb, and the characterist...
متن کاملStable magnetic equilibria and their evolution in the upper main sequence, white dwarfs, and neutron stars
Context. Long-lived, large-scale magnetic field configurations exist in upper main sequence, white dwarf, and neutron stars. Externally, these fields have a strong dipolar component, while their internal structure and evolution are uncertain but highly relevant to several problems in stellar and high-energy astrophysics. Aims. We discuss the main properties expected for the stable magnetic conf...
